The course for each race will be communicated orally from the committee boat prior to each race, competitors should come within hailing distance as soon as the committee boat is on station. Dinghy courses are typically either a triangle or a sausage (windward/leeward) marked by buoys laid on the day with the fixed East Yacht Mark (orange fixed pole) optionally used as one of the marks. The start line is between two marks laid on one of the legs to provide a windward start and the same line is used as the finish line. At the end of each lap a boat must pass through the finish line and will then start a new lap unless the S flag is flying.
The course will be typically communicated as "Triangle to Port" for example or "Sausage to Starboard".
