Junior Club

Fisherrow Yacht Club offers two parallel pathways to youngsters that want to join us to learn to sail, this approach mirrors the opportunities that adult learners have.

Firstly juniors and their families can access the “learn to sail” RYA modules taught at the club.

  • These are taught by our fully qualified RYA instructors, available only to our members and the courses are great value.
  • These courses can take you from never having been in a boat before to safely sailing solo in moderate conditions, knowing how to rig and derig your boat, launch and recover and right a capsize if you have decided to sample the water temperature.

Having acquired these basic sailing skills, the second pathway provides opportunity to practise these newly acquired skills and progress.

  • We host a Friday night sail, when the tides allow, called junior club or family sailing with the specific focus on getting a group of juniors, from youngsters right through to teenagers, out on the water together, having fun, enjoying sailing, socialising and making friends.
  • The juniors need to be under the supervision of a parent or nominated adult for these and other club sessions.
  • There is hot chocolate afterwards and an area of the club for the juniors to relax in while the adults may chose to relax and socialise in the bar which is open every Friday night.
  • On the Friday night, juniors and their families sailing together have the priority in booking club dinghies, but all are welcome and there are generally plenty of boats available.
  • All members are welcome to sail whenever a club event is on and the safety boat is on the water, having first assessed the conditions against their ability, so the juniors and families can also sail on race days and funsails.
