Race Officer Procedures 2018

Mark McClelland

16 March 2018, 7.30pm

If you are a designated R.O. at any point this year, this is for you as we have reviewed and revised our procedures to streamline them with mark letters and several other "new to us" ways of making your life easier. Please do come along and join the session which is relaxed and designed to be enjoyable.

The session can be subdivided into 2 sections:

Introduction to Race Officer Duties

The first from 7.30 to 8.30 will be an introduction to Race Officer duties. What makes a good course, how to run a race, flags and their meanings. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions, practical demonstrations, incoherent ramblings and poor puns.

This is aimed at all members not yet confident enough to take the duty, those who are assisting this year and will also be useful to folks starting to race soon (although we do have more focussed talks on that in the near future).

Changes for This Season

The second half will be a run through the changes for this season. The Sailing Committee have been working hard to make improvements to how we communicate courses from the safety boat and we have new methods for this season. This is all covered on the newly updated racing section of the club website which also has an updated guidance for Race Officers section. The updated Sailing Instructions for 2018 will be published shortly. More experienced Race Officers may want to take this opportunity to ask questions and get acquainted with the new systems. This will be from 8.30 onwards.
