FYC RIB Crib Sheet

At the clubhouse

  1. Get a Buoyancy Aid.

  2. Decide which Rib you will be using.

  3. Keys plus kill switch are in the left hand cupboard outside the men’s changing room.

    • Red fox has no floatation device

    • Golden retriever has a sponge float.

  4. Take a hand-held VHF radio located in the tutorial room.

  5. One or two paddle(s) for tender.

  6. Take some fuel. The fuel is stored in the metal cabinet in the yard; the combination for the lock is the same as the rest of the club locks. Only use the 10 litre or 20 litre RED cans.

If all the cans are empty then pop into the Shell garage and buy some premium petrol (E5) and claim the cost back from the treasurer.

  1. If you are the Race Officer – then take the race bag.

At the harbour

  1. Unlock tender (FYC) - same code as clubhouse, lock up trolly if used.

  2. Paddle out – if two crews are going out – sort out how you will get out and back.

  3. Take off RIB cover. Both covers have tensioners on the forward Starboard side and Red Fox has an additional tensioner at the rear (see below) (try and keep covers dry – makes it so much easier to handle).
Golden Retriever: start at the bow. Depress button in ratchet lever to allow it to move 180 degrees to the left, this should release and allow the tape to be loosened. Tie tender to RIB handle and from inside the RIB roll back cover. At the stern unclip the 2 straps securing cover under the motor and unhook the cover from each sponson. Place the cover in tender.
Red fox: (new procedure) Depress button in ratchet lever to allow it to move 180 degrees to the left, this should release and allow the tape to be loosened fully, then release the tensioner at the stern and take the cover off forward from there. Place the Cover in tender.

  4. If the sponsons are soft, pump them up. The pump for sponsons is under the seat on Golden Retriever and in front locker in Red Fox,

  5. Check the seat (back or inside) for tow ropes, 1st aid kit etc.

  6. In Golden Retriever check the fuel tank breather is loose, and the valve in fuel line should be open (in-line with fuel pipe not across it)

  7. Turn on isolator switch 90 degrees clockwise - will only go 1 way
Golden Retriever the isolator is in the front console.
Red Fox the isolator is under the seat.

  8. Lower motor using toggle switch on motor or console.

  9. Put the key in ignition (under throttle) and connect the kill-cord. Turn the key to first notch clockwise to switch on the electrics.

  10. Check fuel level ¼ tank is usually enough for 1 session.

  11. Check the fuel bulb is “full” (hard) – in Red Fox’s it is in the stern port locker, Golden Retriever’s is on the back of the boat.

  12. Start the engine. Look for the tell-tale.

  13. Turn on the radio. Golden Retriever this is the red button, Red Fox it is the volume control.

  14. Tie tender to the mooring buoy (which should be in the RIB) and put the mooring buoy in tender.

  15. Release stern ropes: unclip the unattached side and clip to the side attached to the mooring buoy. Unclip the other rope (both should now be attached to the mooring buoy).

  16. If on safety cover think about attaching tow bridle to the stern

  17. Unclip the bow line (should be attached to the mooring buoy).

  18. Attach Kill-Cord to yourself

  19. Drive out of harbour at walking speed

  20. Empty the boat once you are out the harbour:

Golden Retriever - release the elephant trunk at the stern when moving at a reasonable speed.

Red Fox – two things to do and they are independent of each other.

    • With the engine running (so as not to flatten the battery) press the bilge pump button on the console to empty the inner hull.

    • When moving remove one of the red bungs at the back of the cockpit until empty – and then put it back in.

Returning

  1. Empty the boat before entering the harbour
Golden Retriever - release the elephant trunk at the stern when moving at a reasonable speed.

Red Fox – two things to do and they are independent of each other.

    • With the engine running (so as not to flatten the battery) press the bilge pump button on the console to empty the inner hull

    • When moving remove one of the red bungs at the back of the cockpit until empty – and then put it back in and make it secure.

  1. Reverse into mooring space next to tender. Note: -

    • Golden Retriever has a Yellow pick-up buoy.

    • Red fox an orange pick-up buoy.

  2. Attach bow then stern to mooring lines.

  3. Turn off the engine, attach the tender to the Rib and put the buoy in the RIB.

  4. Raise engine fully.

  5. If you have fuel put it into the tanks on the Rib and make note of final level fuel level

  6. Turn off radio and GPS.

  7. Turn off the isolator switch.

  1. Cover the boat
Golden Retriever start at the STERN and work forward, note there are two ties that go under the engine, when cover is on and well pulled down both sides, tension with the ratchet.
Red Fox start at the BOW and work backward, when the cover is on and well pulled down both sides, tension with the ratchet, and the strap at the back..

  1. Ensure the cover tape is below the rubbing strip around the RIB.

  2. Use the ratchet to tighten the cover tight.

  3. Send an email if you have had any problems that need fixed.

Notes

  • KEEP HAND ON THROTTLE WHEN RIB IS IN GEAR.

  • KILL cord must be worn when RIB in gear.

  • If there is water in the boat, you can drive off and empty it when out the harbour.

  • When coming off the plane don’t stop suddenly, or the boat will flood.
